Wedding Planning - Part VIII

By Michael Russell

In this eighth article in our series on wedding planning we're going to be covering the time from the day before to the wedding day itself.

At this point in time it's hard to believe that almost 1 year ago you started planning all this. You would think that the day before there wouldn't be anything to do. Oddly, the last 2 days, the day before your wedding and the day of your wedding are probably the two most hectic days of the whole year.

The first piece of advice anyone will give you on this day is to relax. But that is easier said than done. Waiting for the big day to arrive when it's only a day away is sometimes harder than getting through the actual day itself. That's why it's good that there's still a few things left to do this day.

For starters, you should have a manicure and pedicure done. You've got enough to do the day of the wedding so have this done today. Get plenty of rest for the rehearsal dinner. Try not to eat too much during the day, which many people do from nerves. The last thing you want to do is get all filled up and make yourself sick. When you attend the rehearsal, try to relax. Remember, it's only a rehearsal. Any glitches that come up will be ironed out then and will most likely not be repeated on the day of the wedding.

Make sure you give the ushers your guest list the day before the wedding. Any special people that will need to be seated and where (bride's side, groom's side) should be given to them in advance so as to avoid any awkward scenes. The last thing you want an usher doing is coming up to your Aunt Matilda and asking her "bride or groom?" Your ushers should know who everybody is ahead of time. Hand out photos if you have to.

Also, make any last minute phone calls that you need to make. Go over your whole list of things that you should have been keeping since day one. Go over each item one at a time and cross off everything that has been taken care of. If there is something you're not sure of, make a phone call, whether it be the clergyman or the reception hall or the caterer. Make sure your stylist knows that you're coming for your makeover the next day. She should have this written in her appointment book but you don't want to leave anything to chance.

Finally, on the day before, get a good night's sleep. You want to be rested the day before your wedding because your wedding day itself is going to be a test of endurance with all that will be going on.

In our last article in this series we're going to cover the wedding day itself. This is probably going to be the most important and memorable day of your whole life. As hard as this is going to be to do with all that is going on that day, try to take in every moment of it and savor it. With luck it will be the last time you ever have a day like this.

Wedding Planning - Part VII

By Michael Russell

In this seventh article in our series on wedding planning we're coming down to the home stretch. What follows should be started 2 weeks before the big day.

The first thing, as a bride, that you should do is plan your wedding day hair style. You don't want this to be too flashy. People should be looking at you and not your hair. When going to the stylist to plan this bring a head piece and a veil. This way your stylist will be able to get the best idea of what will work for you. After you've decided on what you want then schedule an appointment with your stylist for the day of the wedding. This is something that can't be done the day before because by the next day you're style is pretty much shot to heck from simply sleeping on it.

During this time is when you do your final check on the bridal party clothing. At this point everything should be just right and ready to go for the big day.

Notify the newspapers about the event to they can post an appropriate notice. People who you may have not thought to invite may see it and decide they want to stop by the church or temple to see the ceremony. Posting the time and place of the event gives them this chance.

Arrange for your name and address change. You're going to be moving to a new place and you want to make sure that everybody knows where to find you and how to get in touch with you. This will also include any change in phone numbers as well.

Check with the caterer and reception venue to go over any last minute changes such as special diet problems for some of your guests where special meals will have to be made for these people.

We're now about 1 week away from your wedding day. During this time the following items should be taken care of.

This is when you remind the rehearsal dinner guests about the time and location of the rehearsal dinner. People tend to forget things especially if they don't write them down. Remember, this is your day and you can't assume everyone is going to have the same priorities in regard to it. Assume nothing. Make calls, send letters, do whatever. Just make sure that everyone knows where they have to be and when.

Start your honeymoon shopping and packing. Make sure that you have everything you need for your trip including enough luggage to carry it all.

Wrap all gifts that you're going to be giving to your bridal party. If you're not good at gift wrapping then have somebody do it for you who is.

Check to make sure you have your wedding announcements ready to mail the day after the ceremony. You don't want to tempt fate by mailing these out ahead of time.

During this time you'll also have the bridesmaid's luncheon, and schedule your rehearsal 1 or 2 days before the wedding. Go over all the details of the ceremony with everyone involved. This is going to be your last chance to do this. Assign any small jobs that need to be done to family and friends. Make sure you pick people you can depend on, even for the smallest of jobs.

In the final article in this series we're going to cover what you'll be doing the day before your wedding and your wedding day itself.

Wedding Planning - Part VI

By Michael Russell

In this sixth of a series of articles about planning your wedding we're going to pick up with what to do starting 1 month before the big day.

We are getting to the home stretch here. Just 30 days until your wedding. These are the things that should be taken care of at this time.

The first thing is to choose wedding rings. This is something you and the groom need to do together unless he decides to go with a one ring ceremony. Discuss this with him first. If you feel strongly about him wearing a ring you should let him know about your feelings.

Now is the time to mail invitations. One month prior should be plenty of time for your guests to respond as to whether or not they will be able to come.

You're also going to have to make room reservations for any out of town guests that you're planning to have. You don't want these people fending for themselves or sleeping on the streets. Make sure the accommodation is clean and comfortable.

Check the wedding party clothes. Make sure that everything is just right. This will still give the fitters time to make any last minute corrections if needed.

Get together with the band and make sure you have all the musical selections worked out including your first dance and any other special music that you want. You don't want to micromanage this, as most wedding bands will play appropriate selections. Just make them aware of any special songs that you definitely want played.

Make the reservations for the brides maids luncheon. Don't skimp on this. They deserve to be fed well.

Make sure all the last arrangements for the rehearsal dinner are in order. Discuss this with the guests and the caterer handling the dinner. You want everybody on the same page here.

There is going to be a wedding shower that your maid of honor is going to throw for you around this time. Make sure you make yourself available during this month. Most likely they will try to make this a surprise. Most likely if your maid of honor or one of your friends starts acting strange on a given day you won't be surprised. Fake it. They'll love you for it.

Make sure that you apply for your marriage license. Each state is different so you are going to want to get all the information that you can before you do this. The last thing you want is to make it to that day, not have a license and not be able to go through with the ceremony. Laws are very strict about these things. No license, no marriage. Of course you're also going to need a blood test before you can get married. Make sure that this is taken care of as well. You probably want to schedule a trip to the doctor for you and the groom on the same day.

In the next article in this series we'll be going over what needs to be done 2 weeks before the big day.
